We are the best for our wonderful achievement for year 2010 and was awarded the best sports team of the year, of course this achievement/s are the efforts from many of our lifesaving people, including those who have graduated many years........since 1982.
Also our management and other sports teams like swim, biathlon and canoe polo teams for their understanding and the sharing of the pool during our trainings.

the hardworking and tired Rabbit has almost finish her journey for this year........
The long and tedious journey and successes that the rabbit reaped have been made possible because of you all.So let gather together for our 尾牙 as to send off the rabbit and welcome Ah Long.

Booking need to be done by today..... for this Sat, 21 Jan at 1pm at Ten Thousands Heng restaurant.

Trainings at Sentosa for this Sat will be from 9am - 12.30pm.

Departure at Palawan beach will be at 9.45am to Funky harbour beach for sand surfing and return by 11.45am, miss the boat you will just swim and run at Palawan and Dolphin lagoon.

You all know what I means......

Roaring Waves of Leman

Dear All,
Just a brief write up about our new explored wave surfing trainings ground at Leman.......

picture showed FS cruising the waves from 200m away from shoreline...............

FS enjoying every moment that she had, riding the waves... long stretch shallow water and wide beaches....

We slept at this new wonderful resort somewhere in Leman...

With beautiful supporting facilities like pool , showers which is ideal for our purposes...

A beautiful pool, which you can wear shirt and long pants .... cheap and affordable costing is alway a priority so that everyone can join us...

At night, these folks gathered .... pictures is set to blurry so that no one knows who actually is 'God of Gamblers'

With our usual 6 meals per days ....

At this cooling hut operated by ST, our generous tour operator...

We practice running in shallow water for the first day....

Below picture show how a tiger/cat leaped into the water from shallow to deep water...... he burned his finger whilst trying to fire others from behind..... ouch! ouch! ouch!!!!!

We also do our usual surfboard and ski paddling...

Our body boards with fins proved to be very popular with the newbie...

also, rescues using Perry Rescue lines.... learning this rescue skills will be useful when we go up to Taiwan for swift water rescues....

Leman has beautiful wide sand area for beach flag and sprint... beri beri wide and long...

On our last day, the fiery SCS blew her top and push the waves higher to about 2 m, pounding all the newbie hard and challenge them to come and surf the waves...

Our newbie been encouraged by our old birds and seniors, try their best as to conquer the SCS challenge.

End of the day, all have a wonderful time learning new skills in lifesaving, challenging the waves under the watchful eyes and care from all the seniors....

And it was time to bid good bye to the Roaring Waves of Leman, our surfboards and body boards have serve us well and also deserve to have a well tender care by all by cleaning and polishing it up again ..... ready for the next challenge.

As we gathered for group pictures.... the South China Sea raise it 'voices' again with huge continuous waves from 300m and challenge us to ride on her.....but we have to go as our transport is waiting for us..............next year folks...

On our way back, we stop at this traditional copi tiam and some have big paus...huge big paus

Amazingly, this new generation does not know who is Amy Yep, whilst they are holding hers... and open their big mouth & bite some more...

What a wonderful moment for all our NUS Lifesaving people to gather and have a wonderful time learning new skills and exchanging ideals for their future and hope for lifesaving in NUS and Singapore.....

Despite the irritating sand flies and agar agar tentacles,, where many learn to overcome and endure with the help of the caring old birds and seniors lifesaving peers of NUS.

Thanks to all the old birds and seniors who understand the need of going through the sequence again and again for the continuity for our lifesaving newbie to learn new skills and the growth of ULC.

Dear All,

Thanks for attending the celebration dinner with loads of crabs…. All enjoy munching the shelled creature, think, only KCL avoid it as he might turn into 101 Dalmatian, but there were other food for him too.. Many pictures were taken at the tables…together with all the CBs, original branded CB is not there..

Also, with the men team…thank PY and all for the BIG and small photographs…
What next…
Of course surfing the huge waves at the Big Horse Land – Desaru…
What we will be doing….

NORTHWEST SWIMSAFER CARNIVAL

This year’s North West SwimSafer Carnival was truly an unforgettable experience. Held at Woodlands Swimming Complex, with about 250 participants, it is the first large-scale event for members of the North West SwimSafer Clubs who were equipped with swimming and survival skills through the National SwimSafer program. Competitions as well as a mass swim attracted participants including members of the public, who were inspired by the concept of active living.

Some certified lifeguards from the National University of Singapore Lifeguard Corps (ULC)
were invited to demonstrate a few basic lifesaving skills, including Talk, Reach, Throw, Swim and Tow. The lifesavers also introduced some useful techniques to assess dangerous situations in order to come up with a better rescue procedure.

The Guest-of-Honour was Mayor of North West District, Dr Teo Ho Pin. And the National SwimSafer programme was initiated by Dr Teo. In describing his vision for this program, Dr Teo said:” By demonstrating basic lifesaving steps at the North West SwimSafer Carnival 2011, we aim to equip members with additional knowledge that will enable them to react appropriately during difficult water conditions.”

Besides this, NUS ULC has devoted a lot more in the community. We are featured on CNA.

Some of you were not with us at UCC, so this time round, please join us….

Our girls won the merit award and our men team won the sports team of the year for 2010.
So glad that many turned up for the event in which we were honoured by our senior management, not forgetting TWQ, ........his pocket is full for the whole year..

When the ceremony ends at 6.30pm many seniors came but didn’t see NPY and LWR, only CS, Lyk and ZO were around.
PY was busy in her office talking to ‘residents of West Coast’…

TYR, our tallest guy was in uniform guarding the interest of our nation, somewhere in Singapore guarding the gate,

MT was very busy…

many are overseas-- BMW, LYW, EW, YKJ,

where is lazy CG? Told NN that I can see her even she is in Bedok..

and also there is no cockroach at site/sight, don’t know why he, the big size man is unable to be around… and those not present…

EL, TT,NN,NT, NAT, WQX, Linus, Martin, Kevin, Wei Zheng, and fellow committee members were there to support….

CKM, SK and PKR sneaked out of camp just to be with us,

PYJ with his usual ‘smell of ang moh RLSS shirt’,

EC came from Changi, ferry by kunda,

WFJ came with his stories about his experience inside the fortress….

NH came with his tired feet..talked very little probably without his usual HL milk.

FS came late to join us for the photo shoot,

LT came even later just to join us for daily scoop at Holland.

What you have missed out….
All the CBs that ULC have when they all dressed up for the evening, LWR looked 4 inches taller, and I have to remind her not to eat prawns!! But she ate soootooong and misplaced her ‘can me lah’….you all know what is CBs?…ask NPY.. There is 1 stout girl (not from our team) uses dark coloured neck ties, rifle slings, ribbons for her night dress… sorry, no picture of her…
There is 1 guy that resemble Junyu (the one who wore a ‘欠扁‘spectacle which NH has 1 too)

TWQ with his nervous speech… thanking all …

The opening video which resemble Stephen Chow Shaolin football (周星馳的少林足球) starring all the sports grants recipients including TWQ and beautiful CF.

NAT non-stop head nodding… with his verses…finally, finally, finally, finally … after all these years… 等了這麼多年，終於等到了。。。
--To take note that the success of this year are the efforts by all, especially the seniors who toiled hard for the past 29 years, after all, every years is a success in its own unique way.

The roaring applause that we received when we went up on stage ….

The never ending laughter that we have, not just that night but for the past many years…
When I went up to receive the trophy from my boss, he said “ Sim! Well done ; Keep it up” ..... Just to say... Thank you bosses, your support is crucial. The awards are for the recognition and appreciation that our University gave to us and also to remind us to keep up the good work on what we are doing and not just about beating others to be the ultimate champion!
Take pride, you belong to teamNUS.

Cherish your winning trophies, cherish your team mates, cherish your equipments, cherish your other teammates from our teamNUS sports teams like Aquathlon, Swimming, Canoe Polo teams that we have rub shoulders, it was with their understandings that we have ample training slots, cherish your worthy, honest opponents that have stick to you all in good and bad times.

Beach Introduction, another day of adventure!

On 15 Oct, 2011, our annual event, the Beach Introduction, was successfully held at Sentosa.

This year, we had SIM Lifesaving team to join us. We introduced open water to our new batch of lifesavers. A wide range of open water lifesaving techniques were introduced, including beach sprint workouts, flags, rope throw, basic board paddling, skis, board rescue etc... It was truly a full day of joy and fun.

Many thanks to Mr Sim and previous batches of lifesavers who had made this event both successful and fulfilling. Here's a few pictures that captured those wonderful moments:

Dear All,
If you move around campus, you will find this serious Ah Boy holding a rescue tube charging at you at LT 29....
TWQ is a nominee for 'Red Packet" - NUS Sports Grants and also as the Men team captain representing our wonderful Lifesaving Men team vying for the prestigious ' Sports Team of the Year' award.

We need your applause at the UCC theatre...

Move along to old admin building just somewhere near Engineering, opposite the bus stop, you will see this Ah Girl wearing slipper (same like the one TJK wore in Ipoh in 2007), holding a rescue tube over her shoulder.

Women team captain, LyK is representing our wonderful Women Lifesaving vying for the prestigious 'Sports team of the Year' award.

We too, need your applause at the UCC theatre....

Although the awards that we have for the past 28 years are choking up, but it always never enough.....

Awards are given to people who have worked hard for their passion and love for their sports and the things they're doing..... of course very well and well done... ---no half done..

Whether we win or not... we are always the best ...for our team mates, our diehard effort in promoting our lifesaving education and sports in NUS and Singapore.

Many have won champions and top awards, but they do not have what we have...the team spirit that we possess for everything we do for lifesaving... be it in competing, organising, helping, teaching, lifeguarding and DWFing.... we are always in 1 piece.. in good shape, we are mud but not loose sand, just a drip of water, it will gel together and work wonders..

So, don't forget this coming gathering at UCC.

Inviting all lifesaving people to join us for this joyous occasion on Friday, 28 Oct at UCC.

Those who are working and very busy.... please do come at 6.30pm as to share the joy and laughter that we possess...

Of course there is dinner which will be served at 6.45pm

We are a bunch of fun loving people with the same frequency, same passion for Lifesaving...

Looking back at our past achievements, we are likely to be given 'bigger ang pows' for this year.

Our guys too.... we work very hard and in return we will be rewarded.....

Our Efforts for the Love for Lifesaving

It was a very tiring period …. weeks of fever catching and especially the ‘ding dong’ happening on Friday evening at the holy water, managed to close my eye lids for 5 hours per nights for the last few days….

Our lifesaving people were fantastic, especially the DWF …
Friday setup at Sentosa was very siong, but we persisted, thanks to KCL, TJH. LyK, 4 of us managed to fix up the lengthy equipment with the help of some bystanders… they are nice Singaporean., of course not forgetting NH for rushing to mid view for the lorry.

On Saturday, the setup was done quickly and we move forward without hitches, so many of our DWF were there to support…. Thanks to our Arafura trained LT, EL and ZO for holding the fort in the placing for all runners, one of the toughest events that need quick, sharp eyes and brains.

On Sunday, the long day at the beach, tedious but fun… thanks to NT & MT for their pro activeness in leading for the setting up the equipment for all competing lifesavers .

Many, many thanks to the newbie, the new committee members for been there when we needed you.

At the dinner, we again chomp chomp many ‘longs’ of small dragon paus till midnight… thanks to EC for his treat again. Look at our faces...always joyous and merry.... hope all those missing can join us for our next gathering.

Thanks so much for this year nationals feat, -- to all DWF without events and with events (our competitors), you were all there when we needed you most.

Let look forward to Sports Award on 28 Oct (all must turn up) where we will be honored again for our efforts for lifesaving in NUS and Singapore, follow by Desaru and Ah Mei Land ....next year.

SPLASHDOWN 2011, A POOL OF JOY AND FUN!

10th September 2011 saw the conclusion of Splashdown 2011, organized by the NUS University Lifeguard Corps. The Swimathon was a frothing success as over 170 participants churned the waters for 3 hours at the Sports and Recreation Centre pool. Swimmers who complete at least 100 laps in the pool (or 5km) were rewarded with a finisher t-shirt for their achievement. The number of laps swam could be used to exchange for various gifts such as Block up Aloe Vera gel or even Arena water bottles!

Suited for every level of fitness and ability, the event attracted budding swimmers to seasoned triathletes. In addition, this year saw 2 disabled participants taking part in Splashdown, Alvina Neo, who requires orthosis to walk, and Adam, who lost an arm and the use of his other arm, and both successfully completing the 100 laps!

The fantastic sun drenched weather and the commendable efficiency of our volunteer officials also contributed greatly to the enjoyment of participants and supporters alike. This year saw an unprecedented 80% of participants completing the 100 laps challenge as well.

September: a month of excitement!

It's been a pretty exhilarating month so far... With Splashdown 2011 being successfully held, and our very own bunch of ULC 'new bloods' rising up to the occasion @ our AGM held earlier this month! ;)

The Annual NUS Swimathon - Splashdown 2011

For ULC, Splashdown 2011 has always been an event to promote a healthy and active lifestyle through swimming, an opportunity to promote lifesaving as a skill and sport (by creating some awareness to the public through our demonstrations), and lastly, an avenue for like-minded people to gather and push themselves mentally and physically through a marathon in the waters. :) This year, Splashdown saw a variety of participants taking part, including lifesaving teams across Singapore, the NUS aquathlon team, NUS students, as well as the public.

For the first time, we are also extremely honoured to have 2 handicap participants this year, Adam and Alvina, who have inspired many (including myself) by completing the 5km swimming marathon within 3 hours :)

ULC Annual General Meeting AY2011/2012

The incoming 30th Management Committee with their *peace/victory* sign :) Congratulations guys on getting elected!

The ULC AGM was held successfully with the 30th MC being elected. The AGM was attended by Mr Sim, the LS123 and BM batches, as well as our competitive lifesaving team + seniors + grand-seniors. How can I forget, our very own Barbarella (out-going Vice-chairperson)? ;) She was able to "attend" the AGM via webcam as she's currently abroad on exchange.

This year we witnessed some pretty intense Q&A by our seniors which really put our members to the test! We hope the session allowed the incoming MC to have a clearer picture and vision of ULC and its role within NUS and Singapore (as well as abroad), and that they'll be able to bring ULC to greater heights! Congratulations to the 30th MC and we wish you the very best!

24-25 September 2011 @ Siloso Beach Sentosa.

Everyone and anyone is welcomed to come support the team / help out at the competition!

　　新加坡国立大学救生社团（National University of Singapore-University Lifeguard Corps，简称NUS ULC）创办于1982年，以推广新加坡水上安全、水上救生技术及人工心肺复苏术为宗旨，培养了多名优秀的救生员。近几年来，国大救生队的成绩步步高升，不单在国内的比赛中有优秀的表现，并在学校支持下有机会出国比赛和交流。

　　国大救生队员5月在澳洲举行的阿拉弗拉运动会（Arafura Games）中的表现，值得赞扬。虽然外国选手有着较为明显的优势，但国大救生队仍拿出拼搏精神坚持到底，用成绩回报了付出。在女子抛绳救人项目中，李汶溶和邱意琳以默契的配合获得银牌，队长卓伟清也分别在50米和100米穿蛙鞋带假人中打破全国纪录。

　　由沈教练一手培养的国大救生队和历届队员，对救生运动有着高度热忱，秉持坚韧不拔的精神对待平日的训练和难得的比赛。救生比赛项目繁多，有泳池项目及海边项目，每个选手需要有足够的经验和技能才能出色的驾驭这项运动。

　　队长卓伟清说：“每个队员不只是懂得游泳，还需具备沙滩短跑、携带假人游泳、障碍游泳和使用不同装备来救人的能力。所以队员要在比赛中有成绩，平时一定要有自律。”为了能熟练地掌握各种技巧以及提高个人技能，国大救生队每个星期都有四次训练，其中一次在海边进行。

　　“不论在比赛或训练时，队员的体格状态要保持在一定的水准，以确保能够在任何紧急状况下随时待命。这是身为救生员的一种责任和对救生领域的敬重！”沈教练一再的强调。这也是为什么许多已毕业的学长和学姐还经常回来跟救生队一起训练，同时与年轻队员分享宝贵的经验。

　　由于参加救生项目需要先通过相关的考核（Bronze Medallion），所以不是一项普遍的运动。为了扩大新加坡的救生社团，ULC积极地通过组织对应地课程与比赛来推广这项运动。

　　沈教练和救生队的感情如同一家人，他最希望看到的是队员们能够学会一起和谐相处，而不是在乎比赛中的输赢，唯有如此，一个团队才能长久持续下去。国大救生队也将继续努力，为这个星期天举行的全国救生锦标赛全力以赴，力争超越自我。

NUS Lifesaving team
Remember that you are a lifeguard!

"Don't just be caught up with the competitions, always remember that you are a lifeguard!" That is the golden advice that is repeated by the NUS Lifesaving coach, Sim Lye Hock.

The National University Of Singapore--University Lifeguard Corps, or NUS ULC, was established in 1982, in order to promote water safety in Singapore, as well as training professional lifeguards, equipping them with the necessary lifesaving and CPR skills. In recent years, NUS ULC has been steadily improving and with the support of the university, the club was able to go overseas for competitions and exchanges.

The performance of the team at the Arafura Games in May deserves praise. Although the international competitors were significantly stronger, the NUS Lifesaving team still fought on till the end. In the Women's 12 m Line Throw, Lee Wen Rong and Lynn Khoo won the silver medal. The team's captain, Toh Wei Qing, also went on to beat the national records for 50m and 100m Manikin Carry.

Under the guidance of Mr Sim, the athletes of the team have a burning passion for the sport and take a never-say-die attitude to each of their trainings and rare competitions. The variety of events in competitive lifesaving is numerous, which demands technique and experience in order to excel in any of them.

Team's captain, Toh Wei Qing said, "Every athlete in this team does not only have to know how to swim, they also need to be know how to sprint on the sand, swim with a manikin, do obstacle swims and use different types of equipment to save lives. So in order to see results during competitions, one needs to possess a consistency and discipline. In order to master the many different challenging techniques, the team trains four times a week, including once at the beach.

“Whether it is during the competition or at trainings, the athlete needs to have a certain standard of fitness, in order to be able to carry out rescues in emergencies. As a lifeguard, this is a responsibility of a lifesaver and it is a form of respect for lifesaving," stresses Mr Sim. This is also the reason why many graduates come back to train with the team, sharing their valuable experience with the younger lifeguards.

As Bronze Medallion is a requisite to compete, the sport is not a common one. In order to expand the lifesaving scene in Singapore, ULC organizes courses and competitions to promote the sport.
The relationship of Mr Sim with the team of lifesavers is like that of a family and his greatest wish is for them to live in harmony and not be caught up over winning or losing the competitions. It is only in doing so that a team can stay bonded. NUS Lifesaving team will continue to fight on for this Sunday's National Lifesaving Championship and give it their best effort!

In Loving Memories of the Late Mr. Fang Yih-Fu (方儀甫)

Dear All,
It was with great sadness that I post this sad news that the former Secretary General of CTWLSA. late Mr. Fang Yih-Fu (方儀甫) passed away at the age of 93 on 24 July 2011.
A memorial service was held on 4 Aug which I missed out......

I only came to know when I visited their website today and was shocked to know the demise of the late Mr. Fang.

For those who have been with me for the 2 Lifesaving exchange programs in 2008 and 2010 will know Mr. Fang in person.

Mr. Fang spend his whole life dedicated to Lifesaving in Taiwan especially after retirement, he was with CTWLSA for full time in guiding, teaching and mentoring lifesaving in Taiwan until 2008 when he step down due to illness.

We can recall the good times that we have with the late Mr. Fang when he hosted us during our exchange Lifesaving program in year 2008.

Mr. Fang was a very cheerful, helpful and hardworking leader and together with all his committee members, they rendered their utmost assistance to us when we were there for the exchange program, sharing with us the situation of Lifesaving in Taiwan which we have truly benefited and learned a lot from him and his fellow committee members.

We do remember that we last met him at a dinner last year (2010), at the age of 92, he was still healthy and cheerful and we have a wonderful times discussing about Lifesaving.

May he rest in peace and we will always remember him as a big kind hearted man with grace and pride in Lifesaving.

The matric fair will be held for 4 days from 21 July to 26 July, excluding the weekends, from 9am to 6pm. It's long hour hence i will need alot of help from all of you. Each time slot will be 2.5 hours each and there will be a maximum of 4 members at each time slot!

Hi,　大家好，我是ｌｕｌｕ。哦　type a engrish? Ok. Ok. Today, I want to talk about the invitationals. Yes-si, yes-si. Err, it was wery good, and err wery succesful. The people also many many. Yes.

This year, we got no other country people come. yes-si. maybe because the ES-ER QUE... is err wery expensive. yes-si. and not ewerybody is like the 熊猫 which is wery lucky. cos it is wery cute so it can sit the es-er que.　ｌｕｌｕ长这么大都没做过ＳＱ呢！

ｌｕｌｕengrish, is err, not wery good. but that day 我们拍了很多找，就是为了放在这个blog. so today, we got a lot of peektures. Yes-si yes-si. More peektures, less talk.

So on 27 night time, we got a few of the events, yes-si. because the 后天 is err wery busy. yes-si. because we got to have the SERC... yes-si. But both days.. it was all at the SRC 游泳池。因为‘水为财’嘛！ err, in the engrish, we say.. water... is err.. marni... yes-si.

Arafura Day 5 onwards...

Good morning sir, good morning maam, my name is Leticia, and I am a maid. perstly, Leticia is bery bery sari, because Leticia take bery bery long to update the blog. not like my sister, lulu. she always update the blog bery fast.

Also, Leticia is bery bery tired becus, ebery morning leticia hab to wake up bery eurlee to cook to breakfast for the boi boi and gur gur. So now leticia hab to post like five more days. but gut alot of pictures. because the boi boi camera bery bery good, dat one, the kanon s95. bery bery nice. boi boi bring the camera , and boi boi is LRJ.

so ebery bardy meet the taiwan team. and we eben gib them a plague. and they gib us one too. they are bery bery nice. they also gib us sum harts. to wear on the head when we go to the beach. bery bery pretty. but sir say, only those that neber go can get. so leticia is bery sad. Leticia hab to go to the lucky plaza to buy her own harts. so we eat at the tasty house, which is bery expensive. it's like leticia's one month pay.

Sir had to drink alot becus the taiwan ppl keep asking him to drink. he drink until his face bery rad. and then apter that, he keep talking alot of nunsense.

DAY 5:

So the next day was the first day of the competition for the pool events at casuarina pool. AND THE WATER IS BERY BERY BERY COLD. LETICIA WAS ALMOST FROZEN. before that, we went to do some shopping and have lunch at the casuarina mall there..

After a long day, and some cold swims and judging, we went back to our hostel to have dinner and to rest an even longer day of lagoon and beach events.

Day 6:
We wake up bery bery eurlee, but not because need to cook tausuan or make breakfast for boi boi, but because we hab to go to the wave lagoon as the competition at wave lagoon starts at eight am! OMG.

After the multiple runs and a very very very tired body, we headed back for our hostel. Before that, we had a sharing session about what we learned during these days of the competition. Lots of emotions and heartfelt sharing took place.

And over here, I just wna say how I think that in competitions, a lot of shit can happen, but it's impt not to let that shit get u down. Earlier in the day, when KCL went out during the rescue tube rescue, his tube actually slipped out of his shoulder when he was putting on his fins and he did not realise it. Only when he swam to TWQ did he realise that the tube was not with him. But the two of them did not give up there and then. According to KCL, TWQ was the one who told him to do it, but KCL swam back for the tube, went back to TWQ to rescue him, and still completed the race. And I think that that should be the spirit in a sporting event. We all hope to win, and frankly I would say we stood a good chance. But more important than winning, is the mentality that you have and display as a competitor. I think that defines people more than a medal does. (okay this is becomming like a personal reflection. but i knw if i was giving a speech. u all will surely give TWQ and KCL a round of applause.)

Day 7:

Headed back down to the Casuarina pool for the second day of pool events where the following was held:

Male / Female 4 x 50m Medley relay
Male / Female Super lifesaver

And of cos, this is where NUS got our Silver Medal by LWR and LyK in 12m Line throw! *yay! throws confetti*

Once the competition was over, there was a small wrap up and the Northern Territory Lifesaving team gave each of us this SUPER CUTE koala and kangaroo.. (maybe some of u can win it at a desaru trip in future?) and wrapped up the international lifesaving competition for the Arafura Games 2011.

Later that evening, we went to attend the closing ceremony for a shirt while.

Afterwards, we got a treat at the chinese restaurant by our dentist EC!!!! YAY, while mr sim treated the teamSG members... but cos some buffet thingy we wanted to go to didnt have the time slot for us! :( but the chinese food was quite good tooooo :D:D

DAY 9:

Rented some cars for a road trip! :D

But the water was bery bery cold, Leticia had already been cold por the last few days so leticia dont want to go into the water. Leticia became bery bery scared of the cold wahter, like the hart iron.

So nice it looks photoshopped!

But later we go to some rapids, and Sir keep asking leticia to go into the wahter, so leticia went in to play with all the boi boi and gur gur.

Got a bery high place, you can jump into the plunge pool... got some people they crazy, they climb bery bery high like a tarzan, they climb on the tree to jump into the pool.

After that, we went to a nice calm lake--Lake bennett, just to sit around. Like when I go to the botanic gardens to hab the picnic with my boypren Terry.

DAY 10:

After we checked out we had nothing to do alr, so some of us went to the sharpping senter like me and KCL who bought a lat of shoes and slippers becos we haben shap properly at the casuarina mall there.

Others sat in cafes to play our favourite game, Monopoly Deal, and hab some bery nice cakes!

After that, we were homebound for SG!!!

Over here, i would also like to thank Mr Sim for bringing us to Arafura, where we could learn more about lifesaving and have a greater exposure to international lifesaving.
Another thing that I learned during the debrief session on the second day of the competition and have learnt to very much appreciate is the effort in which Mr Sim puts in for the team, to take part in events like this. Many of us (okay i dont drag u all in) maybe just me, think that Mr Sim can be quite stubborn in certain things that he does. But people always have a reason for why they do things.
As Mr Sim would put it himself, people think about the immediate consequence, he has to think of the long term consequences and the overall effect not just on NUS lifesaving, but also on the lifesaving scene in general. For instance, we are not allowed to protest in any circumstance while we are there, because we want to maintain a friendly relation with our overseas friends.
Would also like to thank Mr Sim for bringing us there and back safely, not just cooking for us, but down to small details. For example, he told us all to print our visa and air ticket, but he had an additional copy printed for all of us anw. So i think you would agree with me when i say: XIE XIE NI, SHEN LAU SHI:D <3<3 (give u alot of harts)

Our Intangible Results and Efforts for Lifesaving in Singapore

Seeing so many young and very young aspiring lifesavers competing in our 12th NUS Invitational Lifesaving championships warmed my heart.....

The SERC was successfully 'launched' with many took part in, some started nervously but gained confidence as it goes along, some were steady and won the applause from many.
Whether you make it or not, it was an effort that come with guts and the never say die attitude which you have displayed.

Hope in real life, you will not panic during an emergency and can effect a successful rescue ...that what a lifesaver is for.

Remember, we are not just swimmers, canoeists or runners, we are lifesavers...

12th NUS Invitational Lifesaving C'ships 2011

It has been a good 1 year and 9 months since I entered ULC. 3 local, 1 overseas competition and 4 overseas trips later, I must say this has been a fulfilling period for me so far, and I'm physically, mentally and emotionally better than when I first matriculated. I would like to share with you all a few lessons I feel is important for everyone.

Before and after each competition, and for this Invitationals, I always tell myself that events like this are hard to come by. You know if you make or break under pressure, you see your training (through the whole year, if any) culminating in that few minutes in your own race, and either disappointment or motivation will emerge at the end of it.

What differentiates individuals is not what actually happens during the Invitationals, but how they react to these situations.

If you broke down under pressure, that is okay. What do you do next? Mull about it, or find out how not to repeat this again?

If you were good under pressure and won, what will your response be? "Thank you, I trained hard" or "Thanks, there is still room for improvement".

If you trained hard and lost, do you go "I trained so hard, also cannot win, why should I continue" or do you go "what can I do better?".

When you lose, do you go "dang missed it by 5 points/0.5 seconds" or do you go "Every point/second counts, and I'm training with this 5 points/0.5 seconds at the back of my mind for the next year".

And the list goes on.

Yes, the pursuit of excellence is never-ending. In fact, it was meant to be this way! Excellence is to keep improving no matter where you are, good or bad, and not just about winning. It is a state of mind that requires constant change, adapting to and of course, sacrifice. Whatever the result is, it is never enough. Keep in mind that the forgoing of a present want for a future result is a tough decision to make, and until that choice is made, the personal result will never be as sweet.

With each new PB, the effort to surpass it requires even more effort that before (diminishing returns). This is where working smart comes in. Let me first clear a misconception by saying that working smart doesn't mean you work less to achieve the same result. Rather, you focus your work to achieve more, and you work harder that before for it.

Resting is also essential. We are all humans and we need rest, so take a break if you need it.

Let me lastly state that although I have used lifesaving as an example here, this applies to all aspects of life. It can be studies, work, family etc. I hope that for all past, present and future members of ULC, Lifesaving has taught you uesful lessons in one way or another.

Seek excellence. Work smart. And rest well!

Thanks to all the efforts given by all competitors and hardworking DWF ( no more calling SKP, name change to DWF – diehard work force) and all those supporting us at home.

We did well and we have learned a lot, our competing team have the taste of what a real ocean is like and also the wave at Waterfront in Darwin, our trainings at Desaru helps us to cruise thru the waves....

Our DWF was very well praised by the organizing committee for been hardworking and always there when they need help.

All in all, we were praised for been helpful, humble and has been regarded as a very well disciplined and professional group of lifesavers.

Let look forward to a successful forthcoming 12th NUS Invitational Lifesaving Championships for this coming 27 and 28 May 2011. Let bring joy to all lifesavers in Singapore thru this meets.

Hello everybirdie,

I am Barberella and I am not here to give you a weathel reporrrt, but for a report on the Arafura games!

Day 1:

We were sent off by a whole group of peepurl at the airport, and off we went for the Arafura games! Got some of them even say, that the lon-zher-ray here is very cheeeapp. You thought I was going to say ling-girl-ree right? Very rude okay? You think SPG don't know how to speak proper English is it? Here got a lot of angmo to teach me okay? Our flight was delayed by an hour, and the seats were crammed, with some peepurl snoring very loudly, and babies crying. It was a horrible sleep!

When we reached here at like 4 am, we were very tireeed. And of cos, it did not help that Mr sim said that we might be gg to the wave lagoon for training. OMG I almost died when I heard that.

Thankfully, that wasn't the case. We went to the hostel that we were staying at to deposit our bags first, then we went to the BIG supermarket, WOOLWORTHS. Then the most common line you hear is: “look for homebrand!” because their homebrand is significantly cheaper and the quality is not like NTUC lousy lousy one okay!! The quality is up there one! So we settled breakfast there, some of us “chua tio” at the prices. I suppose you have to work here to actually be able to live here! So must… look for housebrand!

Then we went to the accreditation centre to collect our passes and meal vouchers and we also have a very handy bag which has a bottle and a handbook in it! Proving to be very useful so far… then we just hung aroundddddd, for a very very very lonnnnnngggg time before we could finally go and check into our rooms.

Aft this, the officials went grocery shopping and cooked lunch w Mr Sim, while the rest of us went to the wave lagoon w KJS. Now with the Arafura passes, it was FREEEEEE. YAY. The waves almost killed me but I heard its not as bad as the one two yrs ago…

We got back, very red, and had lunch… Then it was time to go for the opening ceremony! It was mostly waiting and we also had a dinner! GOT THIS VERY NICE SARALEE CARROT CAKE BUT I VERY CLEVER I TOOK APPLE INSTEAD?!!??!!?!? UGHHHHH. But once the march in began it was great because I was like a famous football SUPERSTARRR and everybirdie wanted to clap my hand from the grandstand!!! HOW AWESOME IS THT. There were some AWESOME airshows as well and the most JING CAI part of the day was……………

Day 2:

On day 2, we set off for the Casuarinas beach for some beach training. HAVE TO WAKE UP VERY EURLEEEEEEE. We had to wake up at 5 o clock to cook breakfast, I miss my Leticia… next time I must bring her along! Then the rest woke up at 7 o clock to have breakfast, but in the end we only took like one hour to cook so the food was a bit cold alr… WE MADE A LOT OF MEAT LA?! IT WAS LIKE AN EPIC MEAL TIME. SAUSAGE. BACON. HAM. Then got like bread and scrambled eggs also. So after breakfast, we met up with teamsg to go for beach training.

When we got there, the shed was not open yet. So we did RUNS. Omg. Then the skis and boards were taken out and OMG they got SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO many and kaahhhhh-lurl-fool!!!!! We learnt how to do some starts and turns, including some sly tactics on hot to cut other peepurl at the turns. Very good right? The wave was MUCH calmer. Actually there was no waves at all. And finally I understood what those that have been to Arafura mean by the beach is VERY VERY FLAT. You can walk out for like 100 metres and you are still standing! So we also did bunny hopping! That's why this year, I am the president of the ASS-PER-GURs, the Singapore Playboy Girls! Very good right?! Because this is the year of the golden rabbit, so sometimes, I think it is very nice to be a BARNEYYYY. And do some barney hopping! Ya?

After that we kept our things and we went back to cook and have lunch. Then we went back to the wave lagoon and there were a lot of peepurl in biginis. But I didn't really see any of my sistels there? Because they are all angmos! But because we were all so tired alr, we weren’t really training… we went there to play with the waves with the boards and the float……. Untillllll… the very friendly wave lagoon lifeguard, Dominic (who was supposed to come for invis last year but then his passport expire so there was one less angmo at invi?) decided to teach us how to BODY SURF… so when the wave is pushing you back, you can go very very very fast… right after the wave passes you, you must swim very very very fast. Then when the wave is here, you just use one hand to pull and WHOOSH! Its damn fast!!!!!! But of cos, we had constant reminders that must be careful and not scrape your mouth on the floor. Because it will be very painful and blardddyy.

Then we went straight to Mindil beach on one of the local buses, just in time for the sunset. Settled our dinner there and there were a lot of random things there!! Like a roadkill cafe, selling kangaroo, crocodile, camel and goat meat… although there were no snakes and frogs, which were the real roadkills that we saw! Afterwards we took a cab back to the hostel and the speed at which the meter jumps is XIA SI REN! But it was either that or walk so...

Day 3:

Today, the team competitors and the officials split up and went to different places. Officials went for the officials briefing which was from 9 to 3… luckily ppl bought sour worms from woolworths, which helped them to stay awake. The competitors went to the beach again to do more training. Aft some runs, Tony joined us AND SOME MEDIA PPL. SO WE ARE GOING TO BE ON TV. Unloaded the skis and boards about 200 times so that they could film it down. They also took some shots of u

s doing starts and sprints on the beach. And after that I am now a real SUPERSTAR because I got arrowed to do the short interview… After which we did some sprinting sets (3Xboard, 3Xski). When we finally got back, we went for a late lunch, and then had an early dinner! I guess that's about as exciting as the day got!

Day 4:
Went to the wave lagoon early in the morning as they closed it for an hour for the competitors to train with the waves. Then we came back, cooked lunch and celebrated ZO and EL's Birthdays! EL's is on 9 May and ZO on 11 may so we celebrate on 10 may. The boyfriends bout a super aweeeeesommmmmeeeee whitechoc and strawberry cheese cake!

At night, we had dinner at a chinese restaurant with the Taiwan's National Team. Mr Sim drink until face very red! more photo updates later!

it's day 5 now and we begin the competition today! SO ALL THE BEST TO US!!!

at this point, I also need to say THANKS SO MUCH FOR HAVING LRJ (Lee Rong Jie, in case u all dont knw who) and MR SIM to cook for us! COS THINGS HERE ARE DAMNNNN EXPENSIVE. but thanks to our head chefs, we have good food everyday!

For those going to Darwin! This is Casuarina Beach where the The Darwin Surf Lifesaving Club is located! Most of the non-running events should be held at this beach, if it's still the same as 2009. :) U will shower there during training sessions too... (refer to video) no cubicles for girls too wor, unless it was renovated. :) We also had the awards/prize presentation ceremony for lifesaving sport at this club where we were served BEER, & HEAPS OF FOOD prepared by the Aussies :)

The sunset here is one of the most spectacular sunsets you will ever see too :D

Very flat beach unlike Sentosa... May need to bunny hop at the start of the race depending on the tide :)

Exams are coming! It is time for the final lap, and we some of us can look towards overseas trips (i.e. Arafura) after that!

Just to spice up a little, a little Mr Bean humor on exams. Although we have watched it before, never fails to give me a laugh lol.

P.s. Please also note that those who go for beach trainings, the bus service into Sentosa from Seah Im has been discontinued since 12th April, and will have to take the monorail in.

Dear All, Amidst the battle with the monster call 'exam', do concentrate and do well in your forthcoming exams...... after that we will 'cheong' to the Big Vast Land where their original men walked bare footed and have fun... yeah... Darwin welcome you all like what our girls have experienced before .... This is where we will be staying, just opposite Youth Shack Chillis... near to Coles and a short distance from Woolworth..... and of course the many happenings at Mitchell Street... pubs, restaurants, crocodile gallery....

The Open Ceremony will be at TIO stadium, a stadium that was sponsored by well wishers after striking lottery ....... and of course private taxi drivers..... call ...

Honey in 2 cups! where all the bees start to gather... don't know who the joker who just barged in ...

The Surf Lifesaving team was also at the ceremony to do SKPing. Lifesaving is very well respected in Australia for both their effort in rescuing and sports...

The celebration at the open ceremony is better than any lifesaving events that I have seen before...

Ocean events is held at the picturesque beach at Casuarina, far away from the noisy city that where the Darwin Surf Lifesaving Club is.. just 300m away from the land of Adam and Eve....

Do remember to taste the sea water when you're there, it is not that salty like ours, taste like bubble tea....

Dear All, Please watch this video, how National University of Taiwan (Tai Da, the University that we have had our Universities exchange program, last year) conduct their lifesaving classes....it is a 18 full days course as compare to our 3 months of 4 hours per week course. As you all should know, today is my AI-AI's birthday. Okay not today, but we celebrated it today.

Soooooo, we managed to actually end early from beach trng because it was raining... so we then headed down to the SOUP RESTAURANT at Vivo and had a ten course meal. Because all of us were hungry ppl aft trng, the food was gone before we knew it!

Some of the dishes that we had...

But this was the dish that was finished in record time of two minutes flat. As some would say, that's faster than we swim.

And of course, the birthday boy is very happy to have a cake, but the aircon vent kept blowing the candles out. so annoying!

And of course, got card and present too! thats a mug with the picture up there tht u are looking at on this webpage! but then this is nt an ordinary mug okay! this one is a STATIONERY MUG. (side note: last time my tchr taught me how to rmb the difference btwn stationery and stationary. the one with the e for EXERCISE BOOK, okay random.) ya, and you know why it is a stationery mug? cos this mug is SPECIAL. cannot be washed if not the print will come off! MAGIC.

Good morning sir, good morning mam. My name is Leticia and I am a maid.

Yestarday, we hard the Games Day. My sir just send email, say it was berry good. And so I come to tell you.

We hard a two games. the first one, is to poosh the mahneekeen across the water. it was bery bery tie-ear-ring. although leticia nehber play. but its because leticia hab to wake up bery early to cook porridge for boy boy.

Basicurly, my arm says, ULC games day is COMING. That's right, its on Monday 7 March, at 8pm.

And all of you have to COME for it. On that day, trainings will end eurrlee and everybardy will have a lot of fun! Although there is no bitch volleyball, there will be other games! VERY GOOD RIGHT.

Moses Spirits is Alive

Yeap, our 'Moses Spirits' was sick for the last 3 weeks,,,

She is changed with a new leash of life-line (SS cables) and raring to go into the water..

I have changed it to a thicker SS cable and hooked the ends with clip blocks instead of the usual 'dead end ferule' locking arrangement.

What left is the front part ... very minor works, just push up the PVC hose to cover the thimble loop...

Please take care.... your love and tender care will not cause the cable to be in high tension with shorter lifespan.

Yeah.... boss making noise, "how come cable snapped?? Just less than a year!" " it is 3 K stuff"..."it should be for our NUS people only!! no borrow, borrow ah!"

This year c’ships consists of division A and B, with the aim of grooming more champions, indeed new champions were emerged as a result for the move.
A & B Division Men and Women champions cannot participate in next year and following championships in B division for continous 5 years as to give way for new lifesaving competitors to emerge as champions.

Universities Lifesaving Overseas exchange program
We went off for our Universities Lifesaving exchange programs to Ah Mei land by the Jetstar kite, experienced delay but kept cool….
Met many wonderful Lifesaving friends there, learn new lifesaving skills that will last for lifetime.

Thanks to our friends from Tai Da, Zeng Li Universities and CTWLSA from Taipei to Tainan for their warm hospitality, the memories, skills and friendships that we gained will last forever; hope that they will visit us in the near future. Glad that we make the extra efforts for the past few months to do all round trainings and be strong and fit for the tedious challenge for going thru the rapids in swift water rescue, white water rafting and abseiling.

National C’ships
We participated in the 33rd National Lifesaving Championships, our competition team did quite well for the still water, special thanks to the SKPing team that keep the competition going smoothly throughout the day despite the heavy rain.

National C’ships
We participated in the ‘return leg’ of the 33rd National Lifesaving C’ships for Open water, our team did well especially the girls with stunning performance that help us to triumphed for 17 times since 1988.

What most heart throbbing is the SKPing team that make the event a successful ones,
SKPing team members are those without and with events that help to put all bits and pieces together for the occasion.

Held at our holy water, the event concluded with high note and was another wonderful event hosted/organized by us.

We introduced open water to our newbie and we also invited 1 new lifesaving team from SIM to join us.
All newbie were introduced to rescue and competitive open water events by our hardworking old birds.

NUS Sports Award
Our efforts have been recognized and appreciated by University; our Men and Women teams were awarded the Merit Award.

World Rescue 2010
2 of our Lifesaving guys represented Singapore for the World Lifesaving C’ships in Egypt.
Together we set off for Alexandria from 2 to 12 Oct 2010.

We went for dim sum on Deepavali at Red Star… another food gathering.

Preparing and get ready to deal with the monster but trainings still on for many.

We were ON for the 6 meals a day trips.
Different from previous year, we travelled by a long rectangular box on wheels, although journey is a bit longer… we enjoy bigger seats, very very cold comfort in the wheel box that brought us there.
Experienced what people always says, don’t predict the weather “ it might look calm now but it rocks later”…. That what happen on Friday and Saturday.
We enjoyed the surf, rode every wave that we could either with body, kickboards or surfboards and landing on soft sand, also performed many types of open water rescue drills.
All other fun activities like jet skiing, kayaking, jumps – (low; high; flips), hunting for firefly, letting off fireworks and of course the big meals that we can stomach.

Christmas Gathering
Another wonderful gathering organized by KCL and gang with almost full house attendance.
Always got this problem of oversupply of food.
Reason: Everyone seems to be worried about not enough food for someone and everyone……

Dear All,
This year Desaru trip is awesome and not the same as previous years..
it could be our last trip there...god knows...
Armed with 5 of our faithful surfboards, 14 body boards, and many pair of fins...

1st day - Friday, 17 Dec 10
so disappointed that the waves were just not there...
It's like in Changi beach where the water is calm and current drifting to the right... but the water was pretty clear and we could see the bottom....
so we just do our usual warming up trainings.

Quite disappointed, we packed up after 4 hours of trainings..

Second day....Sat, 18 Dec 10

So glad to see that the waves are back, but to the newbie ...they are shocked to see such huge waves!!!

The waves were huge, wonderful long stretch spilling waves hitting and pounding the shores continuously... with roars after roars...after every sweeps

The newbie were stunned by the roars of the waves...

The seniors were busy picking up 'jaws' from the beach and help to fix it back to the newbie...

and we need to keep telling them.... "just go... and you will enjoy riding the wave back, if you don't do it, you will forever don't know how to do it and you must learn how to conquer the waves... we are teamNUS Lifesavers ...you know"

So they go....

end of the day.... they are the ones who will benefit .

They enjoyed every moment that they have when they are able to ride the wave back, they sighed when I raised the 1 flag up for all to cease trainings for the day.

You want to ride the wave again....next year, please.

By now, most of you are safe from exam... keep your swords, please.
I can still recall all those wonderful moments with the Taiwanese Lifesaving friends.....
So the story continues....

Day 7

we took the early morning High Speed Rail - bullet train down to Tainan
The interior looks actually like an airplane seating arrangements.

within 1 hour, we 'touch down' at Tainan
The Tainan station look like an airport.....

with shops, and up to date supporting facilities.
Waiting at the 'words by Confucius' landmark for the shuttle bus to sent us to our accommodation.

Wonder whether this specky guy understand the 2 Chinese character or not??

In Singapore, every teacher know what the 2 words means..... otherwise they are not fit to become a teacher.

People who understand the 2 words are able to stand tall with their 2 feet and always free of foot injuries.... kick balls, kicks some more lah...

The swimming pool is sited at this beautiful sports hub at Tainan City.

NUS was proudly presented by the Tainan Lifesaving friends thru this bunting.
Only TYR is tall enough to reach the top.

We were presented with a very nice souvenir gift each by Tainan Lifesaving President Mr. Zheng.

again, I was ask to present a speech in Mandarin.... it is an honour to do so.

We performed a water safety demo to the Tainan people .....

We are truly honour and glad to be invited for the demo as well as the dinner celebrations by Presdient Mr. Zheng.

I , on behalf of NUS, thank the Tainan Lifesaving for hosting us ...of course..the speech was in Mandarin and Taiwanese Hokkien.

Me too, I was 'conferred' for been hardworking with the lifetime membership as Honourable Lifeguard by CTWLSA, it was indeed an honour to received this prestigious award.

SG Stanley Wu, presented the Achievement plaque to teamNUS Lifesaving.

For some, you might be able recall a poet written by one of your seniors, Ah Da, few years back..

The poet go like this,

I squinted through my left eye into the viewfinder, to find the brilliant yellow boards overturned like planks by the spilling waves, and my team-mates flipped into South China Sea like toothpicks. When I was similarly flicked off, I was also treated to a gymnastics lesson of somersaults and rolls.

Is it futile trying to capture such moments?

But isn’t it the only way of trying to imprint it for when the memories get filed away in our minds, or for telling our friends who didn’t have the privilege of coming?

Of course there’s also writing/drawing, and, leaving the drawing to someone else, this is what I have to say.

This happen to CKM during the World Lifesaving championships in Alexandria, Egypt

He was spotted standing at the start line next to world champ Shannon in the same heat for ski...

and SW standing next with another world champ Naomi Flood ( the one who pour all 'countries sea water' into the Japan Sea during DHL Challenge 2004 with MT)

Alexandria beach is so beautiful with shallow beach sand and pretty spilling wave sweeping in for the whole day.....

WFJ does not has a world champ next to him but he got his trade mark ski which he adores...red and yellow...
